Gabrielle “Coco” Bonheur Chanel

Updated: Aug 23, 2019

In 1983, I graduated from 8th grade in a black, micropleated chiffon dress with a black and white stripped bow at the neck. In 1987, I went to my prom in a black taffeta dress with white lace bodice and oversized gold and pearl buttons down the front. It's probably safe to say, I have ALWAYS been a bit Chanel obsessed. And why not?

Born on August 19th, 1883, Chanel was an orphan who built an empire in a male dominated industry and a class society that left little opportunity for women. She broke all the norms and forever transformed the way women dress. She alone defined luxury and set the standard for elegance. Coco Chanel changed the world!

Each time I visit Paris, I look forward to my time at 31 Rue Carbon. For me, this flagship location is heaven on earth! The feeling I get when I walk through those commanding black gates is just a thin thread away from what I expect to feel when I walk through the pearly gates of Heaven. C’mon! This is where black, a color traditionally reserved for mourners, became every woman's glamour go-to. This is where our rib cages were freed from corsets and jersey knit, a “paupers fabric,” was weighed down with gold link chain to become the iconic, boxy suit that every fashionista gauges her closet success by.

In June, 2017 I spent an afternoon there… ohhh’ing and ahhh’ing, drooling and wishing, of course… but also observing. At 31 Rue Cambon, no detail is overlooked. Every attention is given to ensure excellence. So much of what you have come to expect as the Maison Marcellé experience is inspired by what happens behind those doors. Is it all a bit over the top? Oui, absolument! So what? It's luxury and you, Madame, are worth it.

Every August, Maison Marcellé pays tribute to the magic that is Chanel. On August 19th, we celebrated Madame Chanel’s birthday with champagne et framboise, and the window display is dedicated to her iconic style. If you missed the bonne anniversaire soirée, we hope that you will come take a peek inside of our trés chic window and be inspired.
